Beauty Bits – “The Versatility of the Little Black Dress”, Monica Brooks
The origin of the little black dress dates back to the 1920s designs of Coco Chanel, intended to be long-lasting, versatile and affordable. The “LBD” – what most fashion stylists refer to as the “little black dress” is something that can be played around with, but most women don’t know how. I recall when my Mom and aunts got dressed up and went somewhere fancy, they were all in black with sparkles and glitter; rhinestones were everywhere.
Well, it’s 2012 and the versatility of the “LBD” has changed dramatically. They range from short to long or simple to bold. There is no longer a need to fuss or fidget because the dress is too short, too tight or too much. It has a magical quality that you can’t quite seem to put your finger on it, but it makes you look thinner, prettier and somehow more charming. The one-hit wonder, is a piece of clothing to turn to, time and time again. When worn well, you’re going to get noticed and all for the right reasons.
The fact that the LBD is such a keeper is reason enough to invest in a “good” one, and that means one that fits your body type perfectly. Since it’s one solid block of black color, it’s nice to experiment with unusual cuts or a dramatic silhouette. It’s also the best time to hone in on your best “asset” be it your legs, bust or waistline.
Key things to keep in mind when exploring the versatility of your LBD:
- Emphasize one asset at a time – If you have great legs, opt for a shorter LBD. If you have great arms, opt for a sleeveless or even a cap-sleeved LBD. Whatever your asset, play up to your personal style
- Accessorize-Accessorize-Accessorize!! – I love accessories, and they can make the simplest LBD pop; it can be matched with a sparkly clutch or vintage purse, a bold necklace, chunky bracelets, a bright cocktail ring, maybe even eye-catching shoes. By simply changing accessories, you can wear your dress even in the same week, without having to worry whether “they’ve seen you in that already!
If you are going to dinner, out on the town, a cocktail party or even a networking event, remember one thing is for sure, depending on your mood and the occasion you can transform any Little Black Dress.
